On Tuesday, New York Governor Kathy Hochul said Manhattan Prosecutor Alvin Bragg was taking steps to realize their shared vision. After taking over as Manhattan attorney General on January 1, Paik issued a misdemeanor criminal justice policy that no longer charges people who are not involved in felonies, according to NBCNewYork.Baek’s misdemeanor policy came under fire immediately after it was released.Baek’s most controversial change is to drop charges against some suspects in custody and reduce armed robbery to a misdemeanor burglary.Major crimes in the Patrol Borough Manhattan North have increased 23 percent since the beginning of the year compared with the same period last year, with robberies up 43 percent and shootings nearly doubling, according to NYPD statistics.Shootings have soared even more.Ms. Hotchu had previously said that she was aware that the governor had the power to remove district attorneys, but that it was her responsibility to meet with Mr. Paik to consider reassigning cases to Manhattan prosecutors if they did not bring charges.(Compiled: HS)
